“VIRGIL WAS HERE”

“VIRGIL WAS HERE”

Sunday November 28th, 2021. The night before finalising the first collection to send to the factory. Sitting and having dinner, while scrolling through Instagram, the news popped up. Virgil Abloh had passed away. The news was a shock to the whole world. As a hero of mine, having never studied design, the news hit very hard, to the point of tears. For the first time, when someone world known has passed, I understood why people had outpourings of grief in this situation. My wife suggested performing a small ceremony for Virgil to honour his memory. By writing a message to him on a piece of paper, and burning it in a candle, it would send the message out to him and he would hear it. While the message was burning, I took a picture of it to remember it.

I looked at it for about 10 minutes straight. Immediately, the colour of this message was clear to me. Having never seen a colour like it, the key piece of the collection, an organza jacket, which was originally going to be a blue colour, needed to be changed. To the colour of the message burning, as a tribute to Virgil Abloh and everything he meant to so many people.

This organza jacket is more than just a garment; it’s a heartfelt tribute to Virgil Abloh. His legacy of blending art with fashion, of making bold statements through clothing, lives on in this creation. The burning message, now transformed into a beautiful, wearable piece, symbolises the enduring impact of Abloh’s work and the passion he ignited in the hearts of many.

In creating this jacket, I wanted to honour a visionary whose influence will continue to burn brightly in the world of fashion. The organza jacket stands as a testament to Virgil Abloh’s extraordinary vision, a symbol of creativity that transcends time, just as his designs have done.
